Meltem Urgun-Demirtas is a Principal Environmental Engineer and Group Leader for Waste to Energy Program. She has a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering and earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology. She has specialized in industrial and municipal wastewater treatment to provide innovative, effective and cost-saving technologies for improvement of wastewater treatment plants and develop new biofuel production technologies from waste. She has worked on challenging projects funded by Water Environment Federation, US EPA, BP North America and California Energy Commission.  She has also demonstrated advanced treatment processes to achieve stringent discharge levels in the wastewater through pilot-scale and full-scale work at municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants. She is author/coauthor of 28 journal and over 40 technical papers and presentations in the wastewater/waste treatment and biofuel production area.
